Frequently Asked Questions
What bookkeeping services do you offer?
The bookkeeping services offered by Novel Bookkeepers can range from the simple basics (i.e. categorizing and reconciling) to more in-depth services such as A/R and A/P tracking, budgeting, cash flow planning, and KPI-driven dashboards. Having your books in order leads to better business decisions. How do you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been?
How do I know if I need a bookkeeper?
Every single business needs bookkeeping. The question isn’t whether you need a bookkeeper, but rather how you accomplish meeting your bookkeeping needs. You can do it yourself, hire someone in-house, or outsource to an individual or firm. Each option comes with a cost (time, money, or both), so it is important to consider what that means for your specific business needs. Whichever path you pick, good bookkeeping should be viewed as an asset to your business rather than simply another expense.
Do I need a bookkeeper if I already use QuickBooks?
Unpopular Opinion: You do need a bookkeeper even if you are already using QuickBooks. QuickBooks Online (QBO) is a highly versatile accounting software that helps business owners maintain their books. Though QBO continually rolls out advanced features that help with its user experiences, it is still crucial to have someone with bookkeeping and accounting knowledge maintaining your system. If you cannot do this work yourself or hire internally, consider outsourcing to a trusted professional such as Novel Bookkeepers.
Can you help if I’m behind on my bookkeeping?
Novel Bookkeepers can absolutely help you out if you are behind on your bookkeeping! This is where I tend to shine, actually. Not only do we catch your bookkeeping up, but we make sure to catch any errors or inconsistencies we see in the historical data.
How much do bookkeeping services cost?
The cost of bookkeeping services with Novel Bookkeepers depends entirely on key metrics, including transactional volume, complexity, and local and industry norms. I also do not believe in charging for services if they are not needed. I have packages, but they can be customized based on the business owner’s specific needs.
Do you work with nonprofits?
Absolutely! Nonprofits hold a special place in my heart. They also have unique bookkeeping and reporting needs that you don’t typically see with for-profit businesses, such as tracking donations and grants or understanding how funds are allocated. Using my bookkeeping skills to support an organization doing meaningful work is a great way to contribute to their specific mission.
Do you work with businesses outside of Florida?
Though Novel Bookkeepers was established in Florida in 2021, we work remotely to help businesses in any US area. We currently serve clients in Florida, Alabama, and California, with historical clients in Texas and Oklahoma.
Do I have to use QuickBooks Online?
At Novel Bookkeepers, we primarily work using QuickBooks Online, but we are happy to consider your existing accounting software. Continuing education is an important endeavor, and we are looking into learning how to navigate Xero software next.
How often will my bookkeeping be updated?
At the very minimum, your bookkeeping will be updated weekly. We have had clients before that needed daily attention. Of course, the frequency will depend on your business’s specific needs.
What information do I need to provide to my bookkeeper?
The information you will need to provide to your bookkeeper depends on your business’s specific needs. Your bookkeeper may ask you for loan origination documents, monthly bank and credit card statements, purchase agreements for large assets, and possibly login access, especially for any third-party apps. You should also request documentation from your bookkeeper, such as any credentials, certifications, and especially insurance.
